
New Beginnings
As I sat in church on Easter Sunday, I was struck by how something amazing happened out of the most terrible of tragedies. Sure, even the strength of a hurricane is nothing compared to the power of Christ’s death and resurrection, but I thought of some parallels.
As a state, Louisiana has been racked by the storms of life, literally and figuratively. We have suffered billions of dollars of storm damage, human misery, and a wrecked insurance market. For perspective, I recently quoted an insurance policy for a client that was over $6000. It was around $2500 the year before. I would have been glad for them to go to another agency if they could have gotten a better rate, but alas, there was no better choice. Likewise, we lost a long time customer because, although we had his automobile insured for years, we could not find a single company to combine his home and auto. Sometimes the darkest night comes just before dawn. I have to believe that things will get better. There is some positive development that may move us forward. The state allocated over $45 million to attract new carriers to begin doing business in the state. Insurance will be a major focus of the state government when the session begins. The legislature is looking at other efforts as well, including shoring and roof reinforcement programs. While I still have major questions, I have to have faith that things will get better. I have no other option.
